PPIs and Stroke Risk

Are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) associated with an increased risk of stroke?

This is one of the topics of discussion this week at the American Heart Association annual meeting.  Researchers analyzed records of nearly 245,000 Danish patients.  During about six years of follow-up, nearly 9,500 patients had their first ischemic stroke.  This study cannot establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between PPIs and an increased risk of stroke.  This research shows an association only.  For more information, visit http://newsroom.heart.org/news/Xpopular-heartburn-medication-may-increase-ischemic-stroke-risk.

Have you noticed an increase in the incidence of stroke in your patients taking PPIs?
